Laboratory Services

AASHTO-Accredited Testing.
Full Chain of Custody.

Our South Elgin laboratory supports every phase of geotechnical and construction materials work — reducing turnaround time and maintaining chain of custody from field collection through final report delivery.

AASHTO Accredited — Soils, Aggregate & HMA
IDOT District 1 Approved — Bituminous & Aggregate
NICET-Certified — Laboratory Management
AASHTO & ASTM — Standard Test Methods

An in-house lab built around project velocity.

Most geotechnical firms send samples out. MSET processes them in-house. That means faster turnaround, tighter chain of custody, and engineering staff who are in the same building as the technicians running your tests.

Our facility at 410 Nolen Drive was purpose-built in 2019 to expand our testing capacity and operational efficiency. The laboratory handles soils, aggregate, HMA, concrete, and soil stabilization work — covering both field-driven geotechnical programs and heavy construction QC/QA contracts.

Subcontract laboratory services are available to other geotechnical and pavement engineering firms requiring accredited testing capacity without in-house equipment.

AASHTO T 89 / T 90Liquid Limit & Plastic Limit (Atterberg)
AASHTO T 99 / T 180Moisture-Density (Standard & Modified Proctor)
AASHTO T 258Expansive Soils (Swell Potential)
ASTM D2166Unconfined Compressive Strength
ASTM D2435One-Dimensional Consolidation
ASTM D5084Hydraulic Conductivity (Permeability)
ASTM D4767Consolidated Undrained Triaxial (CU)
ASTM D4318Atterberg Limits (ASTM)

PCC & Concrete Testing

Compressive and flexural strength testing of Portland cement concrete cylinders and beams in support of IDOT and private construction QC/QA programs. Fresh concrete testing including unit weight, slump, air content, and temperature — performed by ACI-certified field technicians.

Standard Test Methods
AASHTO T 22Compressive Strength of Concrete Cylinders
ASTM C39Compressive Strength of Cylindrical Concrete
ASTM C78Flexural Strength (Modulus of Rupture)
ASTM C138Unit Weight & Yield of Concrete
ASTM C143Slump of Hydraulic Cement Concrete

ASTM C231Air Content — Pressure Method
Concrete compression testing

Available to other engineering firms.

MSET's accredited laboratory is available as a subcontract resource for geotechnical and pavement firms that require accredited testing capacity without maintaining in-house equipment or staff.

  • Soil stabilization mix design (lime, cement, fly ash, FDR, CIR)
  • HMA mix design verification and extraction/gradation testing
  • Aggregate classification and soundness testing
  • Geotechnical soils testing — classification, compaction, strength
  • Concrete cylinder break program support
  • Turnaround options discussed at project initiation

From field collection to signed report.

Our in-house lab eliminates handoffs to third-party facilities — shortening turnaround and keeping your project moving.

01

Field Collection

Samples are collected by MSET field technicians or received directly from contractors, labeled, and logged into chain of custody at the point of collection.

02

Lab Receipt & Logging

Samples are received at South Elgin, logged by sample ID, and assigned to the appropriate testing queue. No third-party shipping delays.

03

Testing & QC Review

Technicians run tests to AASHTO or ASTM methods. Results are reviewed by lab staff and flagged for engineering review where specification compliance is required.

04

Report Delivery

Test reports are issued in PDF format, PE-sealed where required. Reports are delivered electronically; hard copies available on request.
